This course focuses on the selection and utilization of herbaceous ornamental plants to provide aesthetic, architectural and engineering solutions to landscape plantings. At the completion of this course, the students will be able to specify appropriate landscape materials to provide a possible planting solution.

Introduction and review of home horticulture as it relates to the horticultural enthusiast. A general understanding of plant growth, structure, and development; house plant selection and care, selecting trees, shrubs, and flowers for the home landscape, and other related topics.

Exploration, through lectures, discussions, and required projects, of a thinking/design methodology that seeks to provide for our physical needs, food, water, shelter, energy, etc., while doing so in an environmentally friendly, sustainable manner.

Presents fundamental concepts underlying the science of crop physiology, including crop phenology, canopy development and light interception, photosynthesis and respiration, and dry matter partitioning.

The purpose of this class is to acquaint the student with practical techniques that they will be able to apply to their daily life, and help them understand the requirements of plants in the home landscape or garden.

This course explores the principles, practices and benefits of therapeutic gardens and gardening as tools for promoting physical, emotional and psychological well-being. Students will explore the design elements that make outdoor spaces therapeutic. Through lectures, hands-on activities, case studies and design projects students will learn how to create and use gardens and gardening to support diverse populations with varying needs, skills and experiences.

Therapeutic Horticulture for Adults provides students with an understanding of common clientele who participate in therapeutic horticulture programming. Students will be exposed to common diagnoses of clients in this population as well as activities that are appropriate for improving well-being of their target population.

Provides students context for the validity of the therapeutic value of plants. By learning the history of the use of horticulture for human health along with more current research, students will discover the many applications for the use of plants to improve general well-being.

Therapeutic Horticulture for Youth provides students with content to support the use of horticulture as a therapeutic modality for youth participants. Students will discover the many applications for the use of plants to improve youth well-being and strategies for incorporating horticulture-based activities into their existing and future programs.
